*Free-market democracy is often a bad fit 08-07-03 (rockymountainnews.com) Free-market democracy is the answer to many of the world's nagging ills, or so most Americans seem to assume. This belief undergirds U.S. policy toward Iraq, for example, as well as the official attitude toward many other developing nations.
*Double standard on globalization 08-07-03 (boston.com) F YOU get into a conversation with a billing representative of your credit card provider or phone company, you may notice a faint Indian accent. That's because the services industry is shifting more back room operations to India, where labor costs are a fraction of those in the United States. IBM, likewise, will soon move several thousand computer programming jobs to India, where programmers get far lower salaries. This decision has angered IBM employees and is contributing to a rare unionization drive at the high-tech giant, a company that once prided itself on never laying anyone off.
*Arab world dignitaries coming to Detroit economic forum 08-07-03 (freep.com) Organizers of an economic forum to be held in Detroit next month are hoping to shore up relations between the United States and the Arab world.

*Chiles leader concerned WTO might talks stall 08-08-03 (globeandmail.com) OTTAWA -- If coming World Trade Organization talks in Mexico stall, key players such as the United States may decide to focus their energies elsewhere, hobbling a 17-year quest to open global commerce, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos says.
*Canadian may hold key to identifying Chilean blob 08-08-03 (globeandmail.com) A large and mysterious blob of grey flesh that washed up on a Chilean beach may be the remains of a never-before-seen species of giant octopus, and researchers are using a genetic test developed by a Canadian scientist to find out.
*Venezuela tries to pull politics out of the classroom 08-08-03 (csmonitor.com) CARACAS, VENEZUELA – If it weren't for the violence, one might say that Venezuela's schoolchildren have been able to witness Latin American history in the making - a real-life civics lesson without equal.
*Latin Americas Oil Legacy 08-08-03 (npr.org) July 2003 -- The U.S. imports more oil from Latin America than from all Middle Eastern countries combined. Oil wealth has long generated dreams of prosperity but in the lands of production, the reserves have often been a Midas curse of political and economic instability.
*Venezuelan oil producer in financial turmoil 08-08-03 (Financial Times) Venezuela's state-owned oil company is in financial disarray, with more than $2.2bn (€1.9bn, £1.4bn) in unbilled oil deliveries and several hundred million dollars' worth of unpaid exports, according to documents obtained by the FT.
*A Different Tack on Brazil 08-07-03 (Washington Post) R ubens Barbosa, Brazil's ambassador to Washington, who says he is upbeat by nature, has an even more positive outlook these days. He said a summit here last month between Presidents Bush and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defied all expectations and could lead to long-term benefits for both countries.

08-08-03  optimist: Sally on Ecuador today

Local sentiment in Ecuador has turned very negative over the last six months, as we were able to confirm during a trip there earlier this week. Local observers mention a loss of political leadership and express disappointment that hoped-for foreign direct investment has not materialized, and the government has been less forceful in fighting corruption than expected. In particular, the IMF program faces severe challenges because of the lack of political consensus, as Congress is unlikely to approve key reforms. The government's financing program for this year is not complete. Red tape is preventing the World Bank and IADB from making US$200 million in disbursements. Cash flow pressures are likely to increase by the fourth quarter. <The amount of accumulated local arrears with workers and suppliers in December 2003 would likely determine the country's ability to remain current on its external debt during 2004.>

Opinions?

08-08-03  PaxWax: Most sensational news of the day, IMO, is that Russia (a country with many millions of Muslim citizens) is seeking to join the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), although initially just as an observer, according to a statement made by Putin during his visit to Malaysia.

08-08-03  PaxWax: Quote of the Day:

08-08-03  Advice55: Have you heard that Bradesco, Baco Bradesco in Brazil will buy back some stocks?

That seems to be a very attractive investment opportunity for quite a lot of Brazilian companies.....

I mean not that every day you can buy back at 4 what you sold at 25....

This investment opportunity is available for every open company as I know, and some times the market just prices wrongly the potential of the some companies, some times it is very attractive and profitable to make a large buy back.....

08-07-03  Advice55: I left 3 minutes of my day behind reading this board now....

Last message that I wrote down was 7:30 in the morning, now it is almost 6 afternoon time....

About 6 messages in one day?

I think this board use to be better....

Maybe cause people were more worried about the future than the past, maybe cause people were more worried in help each other instead of ego fight each other, maybe all of this behavior from some colores have made others stop to write.

I realy do not know, but I surely know that: <once upon the time, this board was a lot better to read and participate>...

08-07-03  Fox: Hi gentlemen promised to be back on full tomorrow!!

08-07-03  Advice55: Cheetah, I am going to give you daily inputs on TCP from now on, ok?

I have more time to sit down and write for you now, soo I think it will be more fun. Back in São Paulo for some time, just thinking about the market in my new home office....

TCP closed at 3,59, as I said there are two big fibos on work.

1) 1,69
3,15
3,62
4,06
5,52

and

2) 2,16
2,97
3,22
3,47
4,28

This means that it has good chances to be going back at least to the 4,06 level as soon as 3,62 is left behind and strengh indezers are just STARTING to come off from oversold like hell levels....

And the buy back is still on the desk and being discussed inside the company.....

I hope that helps the crazy guys that have this one....

CBOND?
SPX?
NASDY?
EURO?
UST?
EMBI?

Well if I have the time I´ll write a little about this ones as well....

FOXITO, MISS YOU FOXITO!

08-07-03  amigo latino: <The dollar was mostly lower against its major rivals on Thursday after U.S. jobless claims and productivity data appeared to show an economic recovery without robust employment creation…….

"It is interesting that we got the one-two punch: a report that shows very little rehiring, and a report that shows why -- companies don't need new labor when they can squeeze every last bit of productivity out of the operations they are already running," said Lara Rhame, senior economist with Brown Brothers Harriman in New York.

The lack of headway the U.S. economy has made in creating new jobs, borne out by recent economic reports, has begun to loom larger as a potential negative factor for the dollar in currency traders' minds of late……> http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/030807/mark...

It is hard to understand the logic of the commentators!

As outsourcing pace increases, productivity is bound to increase and that will hopefully result in higher GNP growth . As expected, there may not be jobs created in the US….....jobs would be created in overseas subsidiaries of US companies(US-China-India-Ireland-Russia Inc) .

08-07-03  wally: <optimist: C bond is at 84.875/85.125> I TOLD YOU SO! whenever i am in Fiji 3« prices go UP. that's a tradition since 15 years. watch out for august 26 crash (when i leave Fiji).

08-07-03  alois25: <wally> You were lucky not to be on this flight: Frankfurt/Main (dpa) - Bei schweren Turbulenzen während eines Flugs der Lufthansa in die USA sind 28 Menschen leicht verletzt worden.

08-07-03  optimist: Wally, dead serious question: are clubs and bars still have to close at 2 a.m. in fiji 3.5?

08-07-03  wally: <alois25: <wally> Have a good flight> shittiest flights EVER in my whole life! THREE effing days to cover 12 hours time difference!

08-07-03  amigo latino: <U.S. non-farm productivity climbed at a robust 5.7 percent rate, more than twice the revised 2.1 percent pace posted during the first three months of the year. That handily exceeded Wall Street economists' forecasts for a 4.1 percent increase in second-quarter productivity and implied companies were becoming leaner and more efficient at boosting their output while keeping costs under control. Unit labor costs, which economists monitor as a sign of potential wage pressure, declined 2.1 percent during the second quarter after rising 2 percent in the first quarter this year.........>Reuters
