<Free use of state funds

Several leading civic organizations, including the National Young Entrepreneurs’ Association (ANJE), Educa, the Foundation for Institutionalism and Justice (FINJUS), the National Business Council (CONEP) and Participacion Ciudadana criticized the fact that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) prefers not to issue an opinion on the widespread use of public funds for the re-election campaign of President Hipolito Mejia. JCE has declined to take any initiative regarding the abuse of government resources by political parties in their campaigns, despite the Electoral Law that empowers the JCE to do so. With a vote of 5-4, the JCE judges refused to issue an opinion on the grounds that other candidates seeking re-election while in office have acted similarly(in the past).>

JCE has become a nightmare for PLD. Apparently PLD is very much afraid that Mejia will steal the elections with the connivance of JCE (1986, 1990, and 1994 elections were stolen by Balaguer. There were massive street demonstrations in 1994 and later. US forced Balaguer to conduct elections in 1996 and not stand as a candidate)

05-06-04  carib: DUBAI (Reuters) - A recording described as the voice of Osama bin Laden, posted on the Internet on Thursday, offered bounties in gold to anyone who kills U.S Iraq administrator Paul Bremer or U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

The recording on an Islamist Web site said a prize of 22 lb in gold would also be given to anyone who killed other officials including Bremer's deputy and U.N. envoy to Iraq Lakhdar Brahimi. The reward would be worth around $125,000 at current gold prices.

05-06-04  amigo latino: The Feast of the Goat(La Fiesta del Chivo) on the big screen

News reports in Santo Domingo say that Italian Hollywood star Isabella Rossellini will play the role of Urania in the film production of “The Feast of the Goat”, Mario Vargas Llosa’s best-selling fiction novel based on true events during the 30-year dictatorship of the DR’s Rafael Trujillo. According to the website noticine.com Rossellini was chosen over Penelope Cruz for the lead role. The Listin Diario reported that the film would be produced by Lolafilms of Spain and Future Films of the UK. The scenes will be shot in Spain and the Dominican Republic starting in October of this year. Listin reports that scenes will be filmed at the Presidential Palace, and the army will collaborate. ….>

05-06-04  amigo latino: An effective tool to improve welfare of children

<NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) - For some men showing up in court for being habitually behind in child support, their choice is jail or a vasectomy. Family Court Judge D. Michael ``Mickey'' Foellger has given the option to a few men who had multiple children and were tens of thousands of dollars behind on their child support. Foellger said he considers it an effective way to get his message across - that having children is a responsibility.

``If these children are in poverty because these guys are not paying their child support, I have no qualms about it,'' he said of his policy. ``I don't think these men deserve to have any more children.'.'' >

05-06-04  dooper: PILLZ: < Can you buy RE , or and become Cuban resident too ?? >

I've heard different stories, but it seems pretty easy to become a Cuban resident (=$$$). Would like to hear from other Colores on this.

It may be better to rent. If you buy, you need to do a title search to identify the "real" owner of the house & 1958 Cadillac parked in the driveway. Then do a deal with:

1)Castro
2)Occupant
3)Owner

Gets a bit complicated, but may be worth it....

05-06-04  amigo latino: Many Italians are moving to DR. Many of them are seen on Calle El Conde. Two Italian men(One originally from Uruguay, worked as a judge in Uruguay and then moved to Italy and worked as a chef.) startted today to live in the complex where I live. Another Italian(a mech engineer) has been living in the complex for a longtime(and in DR for 20 yrs and before that in India for a year)

05-06-04  PILLZ: < carib: Post-Castro Cuba is likely to become a hot RE place, IMHO. >

Can you buy RE , or and become Cuban resident too ??

05-06-04  carib: drj: BTW, no, I did not read that book, and I also never said that everything is subjective. Opinions are, but facts can be seen from different perspectives, but are still facts.. Quantum physics would argue they are not...but history disagrees.. :-)

05-06-04  victorn: drj <certinaly very liberal regarding social causes, death penalty, abortion rights, conservation, and the like> fine with me.

05-06-04  carib: Post-Castro Cuba is likely to become a hot RE place, IMHO.

05-06-04  wally: <dooper: Wally: A worthy consideration for re-location> i considered that possibility some years ago but alas... foreigners (if private persons) cannot buy property unless they start some industry and secondly there would be legal problems once Cuba is free from Castro and a zillion former Cubans will lay claim on each and property whether they or their forefathers owned it or not.

anyway, Varadero would have been out for me. my dream city is La Habana where i know more than a dozen properties i would like to own!

05-06-04  panasonic: Merci Pilly!

05-06-04  PILLZ: < panasonic: Pilly, if you decide to sell ABP blonds> Pana, if and when I will sell Abrax blonds, it will only be between 99 or 100, I promise to email you with an offer to buy your blonds before I sell mine..

05-06-04  carib: ...or you sell the controlling stake to someone wanting to add that corp to theirs.

05-06-04  panasonic: Pilly, if you decide to sell ABP blonds, pls whistle to sell my schmall position before le diluge!

05-06-04  carib: Pill: obvious. But if you own 60% of the corp, you appoint the CEO or manage it. Probably, you need even less than 60% in practice.

05-06-04  carib: EM markets in a freefall earlier today after positive jobless claims but grinding back this afternoon. we had Braz 40s off 2 1/2 pts at the absolute low to 88 3/8 (now 89 1/8/ 3/8 +698). everything from China to Brazilian bingo has been cited for the slump - leaving aside reality: a much needed correction after an 18 mohdt spread rally that rivaled 94 & 96/97 & fear of higher base rates after 3 1/4 years of reduction (evaporating the fabled carry trade).

05-06-04  dooper: <<<>>WASHINGTON, May 6 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush on Thursday offered new steps he said would help hasten the end of Cuban President Fidel Castro's rule, such as stepping up anti-Castro propaganda and bolstering dissidents groups, as he "kissassed" to Cuban-American voters in Calle Ocho.

Bush will tighten limits on visits to Cuba by tourists to Varadero and increase sting operations to keep money for relatives from falling into the government's hands. He also wants to deploy airplanes to prevent Cuba from jamming anti-Castro broadcasts by the United States.

Up to $59 million will be earmarked for anti-Castro votes over the next two years.>

05-06-04  PILLZ: Carib, the same is for Levl 3, I hope to make 20% YTM and adding 15% YTM by shorting calls, don't forget, if something big change, I can always buy calls on a higher strike to neutralise it..

05-06-04  PILLZ: Carib, even I would not hold Abrax bonds, there are some option on Jan.05 delivery (the highest prices in gas delivery for the next year, and we are at historical hight levels) that are interesting to sell, but I always exploited with a max.of yield each blond in my portfolio, for me buying a schwein-blond is only the begining of a long financing engineering, if not I become boooored..

05-06-04  carib: Pill: if you own 60% of ABP debt...either you make 20% a year...or you end up owning ABP.

05-06-04  carib: Pill: imagine there is a big explosion at a gas plant, not totally insured, with damages of 100 mill...shit happens. or they get a big lawsuit by some environmentalist because of a pelican...

05-06-04  PILLZ: <unless you are 100% sure that no possible bad news can strike ABP besides lower gas prices> there is no sutch thing, the gas is under the terra, the only thing is to invest between 1 or 2 $ to pump it up, so there is an asset value on it that can be gedget, with 10% more YTM, I don't take a big risk, i cound add more, but 10% is vely conservative,

Pana yes, but if you take their debt + capitlisation, the there is not a lot of room for a bid, the buyer would only bid on the debt..

I did,nt know that Schpal is a massage-fanat, normaly it is only fol schweinkrams like me

Pana, the last time I sold SBA blonds they where at 101-102 (to buy ablax), but I saw the last few weeks 99-100, I am sure they must trade again above par next week..

05-06-04  carib: Amateur: Oriana is always extremely candid, but she has a point here. Personally I favor immigration, but on a selective basis. I do not care much about creed, but immigrants must accept the laws of the land in full. If their creed prevents them from doing so...they go elsewhere. The key point is not so much adopting a fair immigration law...it's actually implementing and enforcing it.

05-06-04  panasonic: <carib: I would not be surprised if the bottom was 20 points lower> no one beats colores timing master!

05-06-04  panasonic: <danni> cash-itching syndrome? what makes you think we are touching bottom?

05-06-04  panasonic: <ABP> they should try to sell the company...

05-06-04  panasonic: <SPAL> having fun in different massage parlour, wish we could know how is he doing...must be vely good massage!

05-06-04  panasonic: No-blainer SBAC still below par? any real prices?

05-06-04  panasonic: I hope to get buy blonds at BN closing prices, all = zero, vely cheap!

05-06-04  carib: Pill: that is nice...but risky...unless you are 100% sure that no possible bad news can strike ABP besides lower gas prices. Shit happens, and being overexposed on something is dangerous if shit happens to that stuff...

05-06-04  Amateur: C arib, <Fallaci last book> I'm reading it with interest. The lady is a bit "ultra" but writes well, and touches a sensible nerve. I begin to see Turkey's entrance into the EU as very unlikely.

The big long run question is not love or hate for arabs, it is rather defining the position that countries with decreasing population are going to take vis-a-vis immigration? Open or selective? Selective on what basis? Race? Religion? Wealth? Age? Education? Servants only? Not easy....

05-06-04  PILLZ: Carib, I am looking how I can hedge my Abrax blonds to give them 30% YTM instead of 20% and to hedge in case Gas go down by 40% the next two three years , financial engeneering , life is diff.:-)

05-06-04  carib: Pill: good that I doubled my SBAC bonds position in march :-)

05-06-04  carib: MP: additional clause: IMF and the multilaterals would agree to freeze any payment to Argy in case she re-defaults on the restructured bonds, or violates the terms.

05-06-04  PILLZ: The no blainer at work, vhere is Schpal ??
