Vic: <pinochet liked to imitate franco. he even went to franco's funeral. but i am 99% certain that franquito would not have attended pinochet's funeral.> Pinky would go to El Barbudo's funeral in an instant. But can the same be said of Fidel? I have more doubts...

Well, I have to leave...It has been a great day for Venezuela and democracy but let's not be triumphalists...There still are many obstacles ahead...I have to leave now...Tomorrow everybody will be looking at the labor statistics and the Venezuelan situation. We will continue commenting...

Victorn Pinochet never was very bright...I am sure he is convinced of his most recent statements saying "I consider myself a good man". I remember a friend of mine impressed after a visit to the Chief of State of a country in L.A. My friend told me that in the middle of a conversation, this General who seized power after a coup d'etat that deposed an elected President, expressed to him: "You have to realize that I'm not a politician". He couldn't understand him and what he was doing in that post. Pinochet shares the same criticism of Fidel and Chavez regarding politicians and the foibles of a democratic system. I remember a trip to Chile when he was calling Chileans for the plebiscite, saying about these politicians: "Se farrearon la democracia...! (They make a party of democracy!...

Another interesting thought is the extent that Venezuela will carry over Ecuador and Colombia if VEN27 reaches 130. My guess the impact will be different. The border between Colombia and Venezuela will stabilize and Uribe will receive more support for his war against the alliance between drug dealers and guerillas. On the other hand, Ecuador and Venezuela enjoy similar situations: oil, a military in power, populist menaces, etc. Venezuela will tend to stabilize more this situation in Ecuador. This means bonds up in these three countries unless analysts confuse the situation.

i've heard that augusto was always really dumb and even failed his first attempt to enter the military academy, at a time when the army was the most discredited insitution in chile and was extremely difficult not to be accepted. it doesn't surprise me that he didn't understand the situation he was facing when he allowed the plebiscite. same applies when he decided to go to london. same goes right now with this new decision to judge him. he is the only to blame for these mistakes and many more he has made.

wiz i agree, times have changed. no more ussr support so establishing a ussr-friendly dictatorship in 2004 is not possible anymore, etc.

Wizzard1:
Victorn, another difference is that the situation that Ortega and Fidel faced was the prevalence of a traditional dictatorship: Somoza in Nicaragua and Batista in Cuba. Pinochet is more the outcome of a person needed in a power vaccum and Chile historically is a very different country than Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Nevertheless, Pinky's logic is against an electoral democracy of more than 40 years. His enemies are old parties and politicians with their bad democratic practices. But Fidel has also the same logic against the democracy practiced in Cuba between 1944 and 1952 when elections were practiced and political parties competed. Let's not forget that Fidel participated in elections as a young candidate for the Ortodoxo Party as a possible congressman representative in the same year (1952) that Batista gave his coup d'etat.

<Ven 34 should be @130> in the meantime chávez will probably get going a huge social piñata to gain popularity, from now until the referendum, using savo's beloved reserves.

Wizz: Fidel must hate Carter. Jimmy was in Managua to see the 1991 FSLN defeat, and in Caracas to see the Revocatorio pass... bad luck. I remember that night in Managua...until the rumor that the FSLN hard line comandantes had not managed to convince Daniel to hide the election result, I was the only "foreigner" in Violeta's home. Then Carter got there with the good news...

wiz the difference between fidel, daniel and augusto on the one hand and pinky on the other, is that chávez got in power because he was elected by majority. the other two got in power without being elected. some people are good at winning elections, others are not.
06-03-04
victorn:
carib <the Venezuelanos really deserve congratulations> i will only congratulate them when/if pinky is overthrown and only after the polarization of the country is diminished, to the point of having no pinkies in the horizon.

carib:
Veni bonds were unimpressed, today:
1) 99% of anals had written reports that there would be no referendum, confirming their superior intelligence.
2) after the revocatorio (assuming Pinky does not import enough cubanos and FARCistas to win) there are the actual elections, and winning them is not a done deal,
3) I would be surprised if Pinky leaves without making trouble.
06-03-04
moneypenny:
Carib is right. Signatures are like body counts in a disaster. In the news business, if you get 20 bodies or so in the first hour, you know it's going to be a lot more before the story's done. A significant amount in a short time means the real number is much higher.
06-03-04
Wizzard1:
Carib you are right...At the end I tend to think that both Daniel Ortega and Pinky are bad copies of Fidel. I will always remember an anecdote of somebody close to Spanish King Juan Carlos after an interview with Ortega. Apparently, the guy made gestures and statements so similar to Fidel that when he left, the Spanish King commented: "If this is so, between a copy and the original, I prefer the original."

Fidel was wise enough to avoid the concept of free elections (and, God forbid, Referenda!) in Cuba. Soviet style elections are good enough for him (and Kim Jong Il)

Wizzard1:
I forgot another bad example...Pinochet allowed a plebiscite...and he was rejected and democracy institutionalized in Chile. People's consultation is bad for dictators and would be ones.I wonder now the investor's reaction. On one hand, there must be a lot of hidden deals within government not to touch corruption schemes...Many people would look to put their fortunes as far away as possible in case of a change...On the other hand, the opposition's line follow closer market's dictates. I would bet that the market will receive this event with a premium. SAVOOOOOOOO....Don't you think so?.In any event, Chavez and his inner circle don't want to be out of the game. They want to play politics in the future. If that is the case, the Nicaraguan situation will prevail but Castro will loose a strong ally and a lot of cheap oil.

oops: venezolanos, not Venezuelanos.. before Victor notices..

carib:
Wizzard: I can confirm Fidel harshly criticized Daniel for accepting to have relatively fair elections in Nica. Knowing Daniel, I am not so sure he liked elections...but he sure thought he could win them. Even Luigi Einaudi, who was a leding US hawk at the time (together with Negroponte) was not sure FSLN could be defeated...Maybe he was just pretending, to get Daniel lower his guard... :-)
06-03-04
Merlino:
06-03-04
carib:
Victorn: as I know a couple of things about politics, and in particular about collecting certified signatures, let me tell you that the Venezuelanos really deserve congratulations. In Italy, collecting about a million signatures usually takes about two months, if the majority of the population is in favor of the issue. And that is about 3% of the electorate. In Veni, they collected signatures of 20% of the electorate, in four days. This is quite an unprecedented feat.
It does not mean the referendum is won, any many more tricks are still hidden under Pinky's berret, but it is an important step.
If Pinky was so keen on democracy as he said today on TV, he could have saved time and money by accepting the fact the signatures were there since the first try, as he new that for a fact...from day 4.
06-03-04
Wizzard1:
MP he advanced his speech's time...A lot of rethoric...He started that he was the one that invented the referendum and quoted from a document he wrote in 1999 when the Bolivarian Constitution was invented. There he quoted that he suggested that for making a participatory democracy it was needed not the 20% of voters that was finally approved, but it was enough 10%. Ortega in Nicaragua thought that elections were the solution and he is still in the opposition...Fidel advised differently...and I am sure he wouldn't like such maneuver...Imagine...what kind of example for Cubans!

Yes, Congatulations to the brave Venezolanos! They have much to be proud of today!Meantime... re: <Pinky is apparently dressing as sheep rather than wolf. Interesting time ahead.>
Don't you think he must have something up his sleeve? No bombast, no vanity, this is out of character, he must be planning something.
He is up to no good. Only something strange would make him act out of character.
Do you suppose he really fears Jimmy Carter? (A man who feared rabbits?)

It's not midnight yet in Caracas, Wizzard - did he really speak?
06-03-04

Chavez spoke...He accepted next referendum. He is not going to allege fraud by the opposition...He thinks that for the opposition this is a "pirric" victory and he now will become the Commander in chief of the Referendum battle. He was quite conciliatory in his tone.

mp <All the GNoEcci love Silvio!> but not all italians love george bush.ITALIAN Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said today he was worried by "possible violence" during US President George W Bush's imminent visit to the country.
"I'm worried ... about possible violence, this absurd violence which we have seen too often in the past," Berlusconi told reporters in Rome as Bush was en route to the Italian capital.
The US president is due to arrive in late today.
"I am concerned by the conviction put into the minds of certain young people that by burning a flag, breaking a window or worse, they can give more strength to their ideas," said Berlusconi, whose close alliance with Bush in Iraq has come in for criticism at home, particularly among left-wing groups.
Mass anti-war protests are planned for Rome tomorrow during the visit of the US president, who will take part in the 60th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of Rome by Allied forces. He will also have an audience with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican.
The comments came as Berlusconi made the unusual move of reading out a statement to journalists at his Palazzo Chigi offices in Rome in which he pleaded with Italians to give Bush a welcome befitting the leader of a great and friendly nation.
"Italy will tomorrow receive the American president. It is our duty therefore to receive him, leaving aside all political judgement on the military intervention in Iraq, as the leader of a great nation, as a friend and ally. As the leader of a country hit, even more so than ourselves and the Spanish, the Saudis, the Turks and others, by the cruel barbarity of terrorism."
