Carrefour vende sus tiendas en México a Chedraui

PARIS/MEXICO (Reuters) - El minorista francés Carrefour anunció el jueves la venta de sus activos en México a la cadena local Chedraui, en el marco de un plan de desinversión para mejorar su situación financiera.
Chedraui, un minorista que opera unas 90 unidades comerciales, principalmente en la región costera del Golfo de México, tendrá así una importante expansión al agregar las 29 tiendas de Carrefour en México y otros dos proyectos de hipermercados que abrirían en el 2005.
La operación permitiría a Chedraui convertirse en un jugador nacional y enfrentar la agresiva competencia en el fragmentado mercado mexicano, liderado por el gigante Wal-Mart de México (Walmex) .
Directivos de la cadena mexicana no estuvieron inmediatamente disponibles para comentar sobre los términos de la operación, pero analistas indicaron que la compañía podría haber pagado un precio demasiado alto para quedarse con los activos de la compañía francesa, que tiene una importante presencia en la poblada zona central de México.
Varios analistas mexicanos estimaron el mes pasado que el precio de salida de Carrefour sería de alrededor de 450 millones de dólares.
"Fue más que eso, sí pagaron un sobreprecio," dijo Mauricio Brocado, analista de Actinver en la Ciudad de México. "Eso te hace mucho sentido de por qué Comerci y Soriana se salieron de la operación."
Soriana, la segunda mayor minorista de México, y Comerci habían manifestado su interés por adquirir los activos de la francesa para hacer frente a la agresiva competencia de Walmex.
De consolidar las tiendas Carrefour, Chedraui estaría duplicando sus ventas a 1,400 millones de dólares y fortalecería su presencia en la populosa zona metropolitana de la Ciudad de México, donde ya tiene dos tiendas.
"Chedraui es un buen competidor con una oferta de precios bajos que sabe su negocio, pero hasta no conocer los términos de la operación es difícil valuar el impacto," comentó otro analista que pidió el anonimato.
"No sabemos cómo financió la operación, si entró con alguien más o si se va a quedar con las tiendas," agregó.
Chedraui opera 61 supermercados con el mismo nombre, 17 panaderías, 6 tiendas de venta al mayoreo denominadas CHeSuma y nueve tiendas de conveniencia "Supercito."
Carrefour anunció también la venta de sus 8 sucursales en Japón al minorista local Aeon y señaló que mediante su salida de ambos países había completado la fase inicial de su programa de desinversiones por 1.000 millones de euros.
Con las ventas de sus negocios en México y Japón, el segundo minorista del mundo busca obtener dinero fresco en momentos en que sus ventas en Europa se desaceleran.
Carrefour puso un pie en el 2000 en el difícil mercado japonés y desde entonces enfrentó dificultades en encontrar la fórmula correcta para atraer a los consumidores.
La firma reportó además ganancias en el 2004 menores a las esperadas, aunque pronosticó una mayor rentabilidad y más ventas.
La ganancia neta después de amortización de activos intangibles subió apenas 2,6 por ciento a 1.662 millones de euros (2.220 millones de dólares), frente a una expectativa promedio de 1.679 millones de euros.
El beneficio operativo cayó a 3.234 millones de euros frente a 3.251 millones, casi en línea con las estimaciones de una baja a 3.239 millones.
"Lo fundamental es cómo hacer que Carrefour vuelva a crecer. Tenemos los medios para alcanzar un crecimiento real," dijo el presidente ejecutivo del grupo, José Luis Durán, en una entrevista con Reuters.
Las acciones del minorista abrieron con una baja de 1,6 por ciento a 39,84 euros.

Chile con peor recorte gas argentino en 9 meses, niega subsidios

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - El gobierno chileno reiteró el jueves que el recorte en los envíos del gas natural argentino, que cayeron a su nivel más bajo en más de 9 meses, no ocasionará una crisis de desabastecimiento energético en el país y negó subsidios a los clientes industriales afectados.
La restricción argentina a las ventas de gas, debido a una caída en sus reservas, se originó en marzo del año pasado y alcanzó su nivel más bajo a fines de mayo, cuando se registraron 10 millones de metros cúbicos, es decir, un 45 por ciento de las necesidades de Chile.
Este año los recortes se reactivaron en enero, pero el miércoles se elevaron a casi 8 millones de metros cúbicos, poco más de un tercio del requerimiento de Chile, y no sólo impactaron a las generadoras eléctricas, usualmente las más afectadas, sino también a cerca del 70 por ciento de sus clientes industriales.
Para continuar con sus labores, las manufactureras han debido recurrir a combustibles alternativos, como el petróleo o el gas licuado, lo que triplicó sus costos, por lo que acudieron al Estado para solicitar subsidios que reajusten sus balances, los que fueron negados de plano.
"No corresponde en lo absoluto, no podemos pedirle a la dueña de casa humilde que paga un IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado) cuando compra tallarines, que con sus ingresos esté solventando los costos de las grandes empresas," dijo el ministro de Hacienda, Nicolás Eyzaguirre.
El ministro admitió que las otras opciones de combustible son más onerosas, pero comentó que el conflicto por el gas está fundado en contratos entre privados, donde el gobierno no debe interponerse.
Según datos de los gremios industriales, el 100 por ciento de las cerca de 300 fábricas que operan con gas en la zona central, provisto por la distribuidora Metrogas, han sido afectadas en mayor o menor medida por los cortes.
En la región sureña del Bío Bío, ninguno de los 30 clientes manufactureros de la distribuidora Innergy está recibiendo gas, lo mismo que casi el 90 por ciento de los industriales abonados a Energas en la región costera de Valparaíso.
"Yo no conozco ninguna industria a la que no le hayan cortado el gas. Y esta situación, que empezó fuerte ahora, no le veo un cambio pronto," dijo a Reuters el presidente de la Asociación de Industriales de la zona norte de Santiago, Luis Kohn.
Hasta el momento, el consumo residencial ha sido el único que no ha enfrentado recortes y, según el gobierno, no debiera tenerlos debido a que las distribuidoras están obligadas, en caso de escasez, a entregar gas propano a las viviendas.
Pese a la reducción en las entregas de electricidad de las centrales térmicas de ciclo combinado, que representan cerca de un cuarto de la energía del país, la autoridad ha repetido insistentemente que no habrá una crisis de suministro eléctrico.
"El país tiene capacidad instalada para proveer toda la energía que necesita la economía," dijo Eyzaguirre.
De este modo sostuvo que las estimaciones de crecimiento de Chile para el año, situadas en torno al 6,0 por ciento, no debieran cambiar.
